Life

Magashule attended the University of Fort Hare , from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts . During this time he played soccer and was nicknamed Ace (German: "Ass"). In 1979 he was a founding member of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS). In 1982 he was charged with treason and later imprisoned several times under the Internal Security Act , including nine months in solitary confinement in 1985 . He has taught at Sebokeng High School and Phehellang High School in Parys. Politically, he was influenced by Chris Hani and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela . He was involved in the United Democratic Front and in 1991 first took up leadership positions at the regional level at the ANC. He soon became Provincial Chairman of the ANC for the Provincial Free State and remained so for longer than any other ANC Provincial Chairman . In 2008 he was elected to the ANC's National Executive Committee . After 2004 he worked in numerous departments of the provincial administration, including agriculture; he was also Chief Whip of the Provincial Parliament.

In May 2009 he replaced Beatrice Marshoff as Prime Minister of the Free State.

Magashule is considered a supporter of the former President Jacob Zuma . He was convicted twice by courts of party irregularities. He was accused of favoring his own company in business for the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa. The court case was closed; an application for resumption is pending. In 2015, he was criticized for buying Mercedes-Benz cars for six traditional heads of state; he himself received a Mercedes-Benz 222 series for 2.3 million rand from public funds .

In March 2017, it was said that he had illegally awarded public contracts to befriended entrepreneurs.

His son Tshepiso Magashule was employed in a company belonging to the Gupta family from 2010 . Among other things, he was given long-distance travel. In return, the Guptas were given access to resources from the provincial government led by Ace Magashule.

On December 18, 2017, Magashule won the election as ANC General Secretary against Senzo Mchunu , who had served as Prime Minister of KwaZulu-Natal from 2013 to 2016 with 50.3% of the vote - with a lead of 24 delegate votes . However, 68 votes were missing from the result of the vote. He was succeeded by Sisi Ntombela (ANC) as Prime Minister on March 27, 2018 .

In March 2019, a book was published about Magashule, in which he was accused of working with the Gupta family during his time as prime minister. In April of the same year, before the Zondo Commission to investigate the scandal surrounding the Gupta family, he was accused of having received one million rand each from Rajesh Gupta for a long time, for example to get the group to start building the planned City of Tomorrow in the district Lejweleputswa to enable.

In the wake of the 2019 elections, it will investigate whether Magashule was involved in the founding of several opposition parties to support former President Jacob Zuma (also ANC) against incumbent President Cyril Ramaphosa . This should include the African Transformation Movement and Black First Land First .

Honors
