Stephen James Rallis (born May 17, 1942 in Bennington , † April 17, 2012 in Columbus ) was an American mathematician who dealt with the Langlands program at the intersection of representation theory, automorphic forms and number theory.

Life

Rallis studied mathematics at Harvard University with a bachelor's degree in 1964 and received his doctorate in 1968 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under Bertram Kostant (Lie group representations associated to symmetric spaces). As a post-doctoral student , he was at the Institute for Advanced Study from 1968 to 1970 (as in 1984 and 2001) and then at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. in Texas, at the University of Notre Dame, in Strasbourg (with Gerard Schiffmann ) and in Princeton. In 1977 he became an assistant professor at Ohio State University , an associate professor in 1979 and a professor in 1984. In 2007 he retired.

In 1990 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Kyoto (Poles of standard L functions).

In 1970 he married the astronomer Michele Kaufman.
