Africando

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Africando is a Salsa Project from New York , which in 1990 by the Ivorian Ibrahim Sylla said and Malians Boncana Maïga was initiated together with other musicians. The name means United Africa in the Wolof language .

The idea behind Africando was to combine salsa, popular in West Africa, with Senegalese singing. Members included the ex-member of the star band Pape Seck , Nicholas Menheim, who worked with Youssou N'Dour , and Medoune Diallo from the Orchester Baobab .

Well-known African musicians such as Tabu Ley Rochereau , Koffi Olomidé , Salif Keïta , Sékouba Bambino , Amadou Balaké and Thionne Seck were hired for the later albums, and from then on they acted as Africando All Stars . While the first albums included classic Latin American songs mainly sung on Wolof , Africando later concentrated on African songs, which they provided with salsa rhythms. Both variants were equally successful.
