Location of Africa in Brandenburg

Africa is a place (“inhabited part of the municipality”) in the municipality of Flieth-Stegelitz in the district of Uckermark in Brandenburg (Germany).

history

Three years after the end of the Second World War , resettlers from the east settled near the Hessenhagener mill . In the absence of sufficient building material, they dug pits on which they placed low log buildings so that the small windows were level with the ground. The inhabitants of the area associated it with the African way of life and so the name Africa caught on. The temporary arrangements were gradually replaced by new buildings. Further houses were not approved because the settlement is located in a nature reserve . Because of the strange name, the place-name sign is often stolen.
