Aganaktismenoi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aganaktismenoi (Αγανακτισμένοι, Greek : the indignant , indignant , possibly also understood as angry citizens ) were part of a peaceful, grassroots protest movement by citizens, which especially from May 25, 2011 to August 2011 against the ruling political class in Greece and the imposed austerity measures in the context of the Greek sovereign debt crisis (see also euro rescue package ) by the European Central Bank (ECB), the EU and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) (see also Troika ), protested.

The largely partisan demonstrations, the social, economic and political grievances, causes and backgrounds of the protest movement in Greece are similar to those in Spain and the protest movement there, which was also known as Indignados ( Spanish : indignant ). In contrast to earlier and later protests, those of the Aganaktismenoi were organized without political or trade union affiliation and political party statements, as well as any form of violence, were undesirable and were actively prevented.

On May 29, in Athens alone, between 80,000 and 100,000 people took part in the protests in front of Parliament. On June 5th, the estimates are between 200,000 and 500,000 protesting people in Athens alone.

From June 28th, violent clashes began between the police, neo-Nazi groups and the peaceful demonstrators, with Greek police accused of cooperating with the neo-Nazi groups and using unnecessary force.
