Agathocles (Egypt)
Agathocles ( Greek Ἀγαθοκλής ) was a politician of the Ptolemaic Empire .
He was born the son of the Macedonian Crown Prince Agathocles and his wife Oinanthe . In his youth he was cupbearer at the court of King Ptolemy III. and later ἑταῖρος ( companion ), ἐρώμενος ( lover ) and concubinus ( sleeper ) of King Ptolemy IV. No later than 219 BC. BC he led Egyptian politics together with Sosibios and played an important part in the preparation of the battle of Raphia . In 216/215 he was a priest of Alexander , 207/206 owner of a country estate. His sister Agathokleia was an influential lover of Ptolemy IV.
Probably through forgery of his will, he and Sosibios became guardian of the underage king Ptolemy V in 204. The following year he and his relatives were murdered by a maddening crowd.
