The Agger bridge with weather mushroom

The Aggerbrücke spans the Agger in Engelskirchen - Loope .

Location and description

The bridge is located in Loope, where it spans the eastern end of the Ehreshoven reservoir. The approximately 60 meter long structure leads the federal highway 55 over the water. It has a lane and a pedestrian path in each direction of travel and a weather mushroom in the middle on the western side.

History and historical significance

A first Agger bridge was built at this point in 1832 with the construction of the Cöln-Olpener Straße . It was a structure made of greywacke . The bridge was of great importance for the local population, who were thus connected to a larger transport network for the first time. Before that, a ford in the Schiffarth district had to be used to transport goods . This bridge with curved round arches developed into a landmark in Loop.

Shortly before the end of the Second World War , Looper Bürger blew up the structure on April 11, 1945. American troops erected a wooden bridge on the same day, which collapsed in early 1946 due to a flood. The local population made do with an emergency bridge made of tree trunks until a new bridge could be opened on May 15, 1949. This bridge was demolished in 1991 and after long discussions it was replaced by the current structure, for which six bridge girders with a length of 31 meters and a weight of 70 tons were used.
