Aghalard Castle (also Aghalahard Castle , Irish Caisleán Achadh Leathard ) is the ruin of a tower house south of Castlebar in Ireland's County Mayo . It is considered a national monument .
history
The descendants of the McDonnells of Knocknacloy , the Gallóglaigh ( Eng .: mercenaries) of the Burkes of Mayo, had the castle built around 1490. It consisted of a three-story tower with square corner turrets and was enclosed by a wall. In 1596, Edward Brabazon, 1st Baron Ardee , Ulick Burke, 3rd Earl of Clanricarde and James Riabbach Darcy conquered the castle, but it had been evacuated shortly after hearing of Hugh Roe Ó Donnell's approach .
The Tower House remained in the possession of the McDonnells until they sold it to Sir Benjamin Guinness in the 19th century .
