Carrickkildavnet Castle ( Irish Caisleán Ghráinne ) is the ruin of a tower house on the island Acaill in Irish County Mayo . It is considered a national monument . The castle is located in the townland of Carrickkildavnet (Irish Cill Damhnait ) on the southeast corner of Acaill across from the An Corrán peninsula . This is a strategically important site protecting the mouth of the Gob at Choire and the passage between Clew Bay and Blacksod Bay .
history
Carrickkildavnet Castle had the Ó Máille (O'Malleys), kings of Umaill , built around 1429. It later served as the fortress of Gráinne Ni Mháille (Grace O'Malley, approx. 1530 - approx. 1603), the famous "pirate queen". Her other fortresses were with Rockfleet Castle in Clew Bay and on Clare Island .
description
It is a tower house with four floors. The ground floor has a vaulted ceiling and a hole in one corner of this ceiling is the only access to the upper floors, presumably for defense reasons. Further details, which served to protect against intruders, are a chamber in the outer wall, a machiculi , loopholes , buttress fortifications in the upper part and the - today ruined - enclosure wall.
