Deel Castle ( Irish Caisleán na Daoile ) is a ruined castle in Crossmolina in the Irish County Mayo . The castle, built in the 16th century for the Bourkes , was later renamed Castle Gore .

history

The translation of the Irish name into German is "Burg am River Deel ".

It is a 16th century tower house that the Bourkes built near the north end of Lough Conn . After Colonel Thomas Bourke had fought at the side of the Anglo-Scottish King James II & VII in the War of the Two Kings , the property was forfeited to the crown, was loaned to the Gore family , who would later become Earls of Arran , and in " Castle Gore "renamed. In the 18th century, the Tower House received an extension with a nicely rusticated entrance; possibly a building line that was built in the 17th century was integrated into it. The Gores also acquired the rule of Belleek by O'Hara , the barons of Tyrawley , and they owned an estate in County Donegal in the province of Ulster .

In the late 18th century the castle, along with other lands , was leased to James Cuff, Lord Tyrawley . The cuff's caretaker lived there for a while in the 19th century .

In 1791 James Cuff, Lord Tyrawley , had a house built next to the old castle. This country house was also called "Castle Gore". It burned down in 1922 and was not rebuilt.

The old castle, which was well preserved at the beginning of the 20th century, is now in ruins.
