The church of Agia Paraskevi ( Greek Αγία Παρασκευή Agia Paraskevi , German 'St. Paraskevi' ) is located in the city of Kos on the Greek island of Kos . It is dedicated to St. Paraskevi.

The church belongs to the Orthodox Metropolitan of Kos and Nisyros , which in turn reports directly to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople Opel ( Greek Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείο Κωνσταντινουπόλεως Oikoumenikó Patriarcheío Konstantinoupoleos , Turkish İstanbul Rum Ortodoks Patrikhanesi , even Church of Constantinople Opel ) is a subordinate.

location

The church is located on a plateau about 200 meters south of the port of Kos , in the middle of the densely built-up urban area. The church and the park occupy an area of around 2000 m² and are around 12 meters above sea level. The church is surrounded on all sides by streets and public squares. To the east of the church, at about 11 meters above sea level, is the Platia Agias Paraskevis , to the northeast is the market hall of Kos (Δημοτική Αγορά / Dimotikí Agorá / Italian : Mercato delle Erbe).

History and buildings

The church building was designed by Orsini and erected from March 1931 to December 1932. The construction cost was 205,000 Italian lire . These costs were largely raised by former islanders living in the United States. The island of Kos was occupied by Italy from 1912 to 1943 , which ended the 400-year rule of the Ottoman Empire over Kos and the very extensive self-government of the island and made significant structural changes. The church survived the 1933 earthquake relatively well.

As is customary in Orthodox churches, the altar of the three-aisled church with barrel vaults faces east. The church is largely provided with wall paintings and richly decorated with frescoes. The room is illuminated with silver Venetian chandeliers. A wooden iconostasis separates the chancel from the nave.

The earthquake of 20./21. July 2017 hit the church of Agia Paraskevi badly and left considerable structural damage.
