building

The first church building in honor of St. Nicholas at this point was started in 1857 and completed in 1862. The church has 40.00 Kuruş ( "Penny" ; abbreviation KRS cost). The church building was so badly damaged by the 1933 earthquake that it had to be removed in 1934. As far as possible, the materials that could still be used, especially marble, were salvaged.

After the church was demolished , however , the then governor of the Aegean Islands , Cesare Maria De Vecchi , refused to rebuild it. However, he is said to have changed his mind through the destruction of Italian seaplanes by a cyclone and to have seen a divine will behind it that the church had to be rebuilt. From 1937 to 1939 the church was rebuilt from scratch.

The church can only be viewed from the outside at the moment (2019) as it was badly damaged by the 2017 earthquake.
