Agnes Joaquim

Agnes Joaquim (born April 7, 1854 in Singapore ; † July 2, 1899 there ) was the owner of a garden in Tanjong Pagar. The orchids - Hybrid Miss Joaquim is named after her.

Agnes Joaquim was part of the Armenian community in Singapore. She was committed to the Armenian Church and the work in her garden. In 1899, she presented her Vanda hybrid at a flower show . It is a cross between the species Vanda hookeriana (today: Papilionanthe hookeriana ) and Vanda teres (today: Papilionanthe teres ). The eminent orchid researcher Henry Nicholas Ridley confirmed the status as a hybrid.

On April 15, 1981, this flower was chosen as the national flower of Singapore.

Soon, Vanda describes Miss Joaquim as a natural hybrid that was found in Agnes Joaquim's garden in 1893. It would be the first natural hybrid found from an orchid.

Some internet sources believe that it is an artificial hybrid that was secretly crossed by Agnes Joaquim.
