Friederike Amalie Agnes von Anhalt-Dessau (born June 24, 1824 in Dessau , † October 23, 1897 in Hummelshain ) was a princess of Anhalt-Dessau and by marriage Duchess of Saxony-Altenburg .

Life

Agnes was a daughter of Duke Leopold IV of Anhalt-Dessau and his wife Princess Friederike of Prussia (1796-1850).

On April 28, 1853, she married Hereditary Prince Ernst von Sachsen-Altenburg in Dessau , who shortly thereafter became Duke Ernst I. Despite the absence of a hereditary prince, the marriage was happy and Ernst loved his wife very much. Agnes was considered subtle and a talented painter.

Like all princesses of that time, she devoted herself to welfare and was involved in charities. Above all in the troop care and the care of the wounded in the Franco-Prussian War , she was particularly apparent. Agnes is the author of the work: A word to Israel (Leipzig, 1893).

The Duchess's silver wedding anniversary was celebrated throughout the country in 1878 and Ernst awarded his wife the newly created, reduced Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Saxon-Ernestine House Order , the so-called "Princesses Cross ". On the occasion of the anniversary, the “Ernst Agnes Foundation” was brought into being.

Agnesplatz in Altenburg is named after her. After her death, Ernst had the Duchess Agnes Memorial Church built, in which the Duchess is also buried.

progeny

From their marriage, Agnes had a daughter, in addition to a son who died in infancy:

⚭ 1873 Prince Albrecht of Prussia (1837–1906), Prince Regent of the Duchy of Braunschweig , Prussian Field Marshal General and Lord Master of the Order of St. John
