Agnethe Davidsen (born August 29, 1947 in Nuuk (Godthåb), Greenland ; † November 25, 2007 there ) was a Greenlandic politician of the social democratic Siumut . She was the first woman minister in Greenland and mayor of the capital Nuuk for 14 years.

Youth and family

Agnethe Davidsen was the daughter of Villy Wael (1928–1998) and Agathe Lund (1923–2007). On May 30, 1966 she married the blacksmith Aqqaluartaaq Davidsen (born September 19, 1941 in Qeqetalik, Sisimiut, son of Karl Davidsen and Amalie Rasmussen). Together they had the children Søren (* 1965) and Heidi (* 1967).

Agnethe Davidsen grew up in a strict home with her grandparents in Nuuk. During the school holidays she worked in a kindergarten, and it was her greatest wish to become a kindergarten teacher herself. At that time, however, there was no training for kindergarten teachers in Greenland, and when she wanted to go to Denmark for this purpose, she met her future husband beforehand, whom she married in 1966 at the age of 18. Also because of her son she changed her career aspirations and did the shorter commercial and office training in Denmark (comparable to an office clerk ).

After graduating in 1970, she got a job at the Nuuk District Court, where she became a district judge in 1979. This gave her a deep insight into the social life of the city.

Political career

In 1983 she came to the Greenland Parliament, the Landsting, as the successor to Hans Pavia Rosing for the social democratic Siumut . In the same year she was appointed Minister of Social Affairs in the Greenland state government. That made her the first woman in government. However, this government fell in 1984 through a fisheries agreement with the EU, and Agnethe Davidsen was not yet established enough as a state politician to be re-elected. It was not until 1995 that she managed to move back into Landsting.

In 1989 she was elected to the Nuuk City Council and was Second Deputy Mayor until 1991. 1991–1993 she was First Deputy Mayor, and from 1993 to 2007 First Mayor of the capital. For them, this position was associated with increasing influence and popularity. She held various honorary positions. In 1997 she was honored as a knight of the Dannebrog Order for her political commitment .

Most recently, Agnethe Davidsen was re-elected Mayor of Nuuk in April 2005 with a record result.

Agnethe Davidsen was admitted to the National Hospital in Nuuk on November 24, 2007 with a severe headache and died the next day of a cerebral hemorrhage . She leaves behind her two grown children.
