Agostinho Barbosa

Agostinho Barbosa (born September 17, 1589 in Aldão , † November 19, 1649 in Rome ) was a Portuguese cleric, canonist , Romanist , Lusitanist and lexicographer.

life and work

Barbosa studied in Coimbra and was ordained a priest in Vigo in 1615 . In 1620 he went to Rome and received his doctorate there in 1621 at the Sapienza in both rights. In 1648 he was appointed bishop of Ugento , consecrated bishop on April 5, 1649 by Alfonso de la Cueva-Benavides y Mendoza-Carrillo , but died shortly afterwards.

Barbosa's numerous writings in Latin were printed well into the 18th century. At a young age he published a Latin-Portuguese dictionary, which historically stands between the dictionaries of Jerónimo Cardoso and Bento Pereira .
