Agostino Novella

Agostino Novella (born September 28, 1905 in Genoa , † September 15, 1974 in Rome ) was an Italian politician ( communist ) and trade unionist .

Life

Novella, a metalworker by trade, became a member of the Communist Youth Union (FGCI; Federazione Giovanile Comunista Italiana ) in 1923 and a member of the Communist Party of Italy (KPI) in 1924 . From 1924 to 1926 he was secretary of the FGCI in the Liguria region and member of the FGCI Central Committee, as well as deputy secretary of the metalworkers' union FIOM ( Federazione Italiana Impiegati Operai Metallurgici ) in Genoa.

In 1927 a fascist court sentenced him to four years in prison. In 1931/32 and from 1934 to 1938 Novella was secretary of the FGCI Central Committee. In 1932 he emigrated to France . In the same year he became a member of the Central Committee of the KPI. In 1935 he participated as a delegate at the VII. Congress of the Communist International and on the VI. Congress of the Communist Youth International in Moscow .

From 1940 to 1943 a member of the foreign office of the Central Committee of the KPI, Novella was from 1943 a member of the Presidium of the KPI. From 1943 Novella took an active part in the Resistenza . From 1944 to 1949 he served successively as secretary of the KPI sections in Rome, Genoa, Lombardy and Liguria. From 1947 to 1949 he was a member of the secretariat of the KPI. In 1966 he was elected to the Politburo of the KPI.

From 1949 to 1955 he was secretary, from 1957 to 1970 general secretary of the CGIL ( Confederazione Generale Italiana del Lavoro ), between 1955 and 1957 he had already been general secretary of FIOM. Novella was from 1957 to 1970 a member of the General Council, from 1958 to 1970 a member of the Executive Committee of the World Trade Union Confederation (WGB). From 1959 to 1961 he was - as the successor to the late Giuseppe Di Vittorio - President of the WGB.

Novella was a member of the Italian Parliament from 1948 to 1970 .
