history

Files of the Agricultural Association in Bavaria

The foundations were laid by the Agricultural Association in Bavaria, which was founded in 1810 by 60 landowners as one of the first organizations in agriculture and forestry and an advisory body to the Bavarian government. King Maximilian I Joseph approved the merger on October 9, 1810 and two months later took over the protectorate of the company. The aim of the Agricultural Association was "the promotion of practical agriculture and the related trades". The association was involved in agricultural education and organized festivals such as the Central Agricultural Festival to disseminate scientific knowledge and innovations. The agricultural weekly newspaper of the Agricultural Association (today: Bayerisches Landwirtschaftliches Wochenblatt ) appeared for the first time in January 1811 to provide information to members. In the first edition there was an article about the farmers and their books. The Agricultural Association set up several libraries. One of them was housed in the General Secretariat on Türkenstrasse in Munich. In 1849 their first printed subject catalog already comprised 3,535 titles. The library has been supplemented over the decades through purchases and book donations. After the Second World War , the Bavarian Farmers' Association took over the Agricultural History Library as the legal successor to the Agricultural Association. In 1982 the collection found a new home in the House of Bavarian Agriculture in Herrsching, the education center of the Bavarian Farmers' Association. In 2005, around 2,500 volumes from the subject areas of agriculture and farming were added, which were given to the Herrsching Library as permanent loan by the German Farmers' Association. This part of the library is named after its founder Hugo Tillmann.

The library's fund contains valuable, lavishly illustrated, partly hand-colored folios as well as inconspicuous multi-volume textbooks. The so-called house fathers literature is interesting from a cultural and folkloric point of view . These include the Georgica curiosa by Wolf Helmhardt von Hohberg from 1682 and several copies of the Noth and Aid booklet for farmers and the instructive story of joy and sadness in the village of Mildheim.

The oldest book comes from the Tillmann Library: De re rustica was printed in Latin in 1533. As an anthology, it records the development of agriculture from Cato and Varro to Columella and Palladius. The book bears the signet of the famous Venetian printer of Aldus Manutius .

An artificial and useful cookbook

"Ain artificial and useful cookbook" by Balthaser Staindel von Dillingen dates from 1556. A later dated copy is described by Hans Böhm as the “first textbook on bourgeois cuisine”. It appeared in a total of 15 editions.

The archive of the Agricultural Association consists of approx. 1,800 original files between 1810 and 1937 with minutes of meetings and meetings, business reports, personnel and factual files on internal organization as well as on agriculture and forestry. Documents from the Chamber of Farmers, the Association for the Promotion of Horse Breeding in Bavaria e. V. and the Bavarian Forest Owners Association e. V. to the stock.

The works in the Agricultural History Library are indexed using a keyword and author catalog. In cooperation with the Munich State Library, the books are recorded in the B3Kat, the second largest union catalog in Germany.
