The Bavarian Central Agriculture Festival (ZLF) is an agricultural exhibition that has been taking place every four years in Munich on the Theresienwiese since 1996, parallel to the Oktoberfest . Before 1996 the exhibition took place every three years. The focus is on agriculture , agricultural and forestry technology and the livestock show .

history

The origins of the Central Agriculture Festival and the Oktoberfest go back to a horse race on the occasion of the wedding of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen in 1810. At the end of the wedding celebrations, which lasted several days, a large horse race was held in front of the city for the citizens of Munich. This horse race was so popular with the people that it was repeated in the following years.

As early as 1811 , the Agricultural Association organized a national festival with horse races, a cattle market and livestock awards. Maximilian I. Joseph personally presented the awards and thus significantly enhanced the peasant class.

This was the first agricultural exhibition in the German-speaking area. In the following year the name Central Agricultural Festival was established . At first it was a pure cattle exhibition that had developed from horse racing. The agricultural engineering show was added later.

The ZLF is known for its agricultural technology innovations. For example, Justus von Liebig's experiments in potato cultivation were shown in 1864 and in 1877 the soybean and the cultivation of cranberries and bog berries from America were demonstrated for the first time .

The event has been held by the Bavarian Farmers' Association since 1949 . In 2004, 650 exhibitors on 120,000 m² attracted around 370,000 visitors.

The Bavarian State Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Forestry has its own hall at the Central Agriculture Festival every year.

The neighboring Oktoberfest, which takes place at the same time, is organized by the City of Munich. Both festivals benefit from each other and have shared the Munich Theresienwiese since 1811. The Oktoberfest takes place on the northern part of the Wiesn , the Central Agriculture Festival on the southern part.

Due to war events and the change to a longer interval between the festivities from annually to every three years and since 1996 to every four years, the 125th Central Agricultural Festival took place as an anniversary celebration in 2012 after more than 200 years.

The 126th Central Agriculture Festival took place from September 17th to 25th, 2016. With around 280,000 visitors, the festival was attended by significantly fewer people (−24%) than in 2012 (370,000).

From September 26th until the end of Oktoberfest on October 3rd, the marquee and a village square with agricultural sales and information stands remained open to visitors. The festival tent was the traditional festival tent of the Oide Wiesn and was run in the same way as at the Oide Wiesn (separate entry, traditional music and groups).
