Aharon Remez

Aharon Remez ( Hebrew אהרן רמז; * May 8, 1919 in Tel Aviv ; †  April 3, 1994 in Jerusalem ) was an Israeli major general and politician . Remez was the commander of the Israeli Air Force from 1948 to 1950 . He was a member of the 3rd Knesset , ambassador to London from 1965 to 1970 and, after retiring from politics, CEO of Koor Industries.

Life

In 1936, Remez joined the Haganah at the age of 17 . A scholarship from the Jewish Agency for Israel enabled him to train as a pilot in the USA from 1939 , from where he went to Great Britain as a volunteer with the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1941 or 1942 . He trained as a fighter pilot in the Royal Air Force and then flew around 800 combat missions in Germany as a Spitfire pilot and with Hawker Hurricanes and Hawker Tempests . After the end of the war, he initially stayed in Europe and took part in organizing the emigration of Jewish Holocaust survivors to Israel. In 1947 he resumed his work in the Haganah. In August of the same year, David Ben-Gurion and the Haganah leadership commissioned him to plan the air force of a future state of Israel.

For the Workers' Party he was a member of the 3rd Knesset from August 15, 1955 until his early resignation on December 19, 1957.

family

His father David Remez (1886–1951) was the first Israeli Minister of Transport and co-signer of the Israeli Declaration of Independence of 1948. His son is the journalist Gideon Remez .
