Ailia coila is a species of fish from the order of the catfish-like (Siluriformes). The species is the only valid species of the genus Ailia and occurs in rivers of the Indian subcontinent.
features
Ailia coila are elongated, laterally strongly flattened fish without a dorsal fin but with a small adipose fin . They reach a length of about 10 to 30 centimeters. The upper jaw protrudes over the lower jaw. There are eight barbels , all of which are long, the four of which are all in a line on the lower jaw. The pectoral fins have a hard ray. The caudal fin is forked.
Systematics
Ailia coila was traditionally assigned to the glass catfish (Schilbeidae). Molecular biological studies indicate, however, that together with the genus Laides, in contrast to the rest of the glass catfish, it belongs to the group "Big Asia". Ailia is the type genus of the Ailiidae family, newly introduced in early 2016 .
