Live and act

Reginald Beavan was the second eldest son of Robert Beavan (1809-1853) and his wife Cecilia Mabel Drury (1821-1896). Both of the couple's sons were born in India, where the father was stationed. However, in an 1851 census, Reginald and his mother were recorded in England, where they were then living with their mother's family in Sidmouth . When the boy had just turned ten, his father died in India in October 1853.

At the age of 16, Reginald Beavan also joined the British Indian Army on May 4, 1860 and followed his older brother to India, where he initially served as a lieutenant in the 22nd Punjab Native Infantry Regiment.

From July 1868 he worked as an auxiliary appraiser in several areas for the Department of Topographical Studies. As early as 1878 he served in southern Afghanistan , for which he was awarded a medal . In 1880 he took over responsibility for a study in Balochistan . Here he accompanied the Marri field force and Bozdar field force in 1880 and 1881 . In June 1892 he retired.

On November 20, 1873, at the age of 30, he married Anne Henrietta Haughton Bignell (1846-1932), three years his junior , in Kamptee , Maharashtra state . From this marriage there were two daughters in 1874 and 1877, the younger of whom died in infancy.

Beavan devoted himself to fish in his natural history investigations. His most famous work is a Handbook of the Freshwater Fishes of India , published in London in 1877. He also collected a number of bird species and bird eggs, which were later scientifically described by his ornithologically interested brother Robert Cecil Beavan (1841–1870) .

Reginald Beavan retired with the military rank of Colonel and spent the rest of his life in Llowes , Brecknockshire , Wales . He died in May 1927 at the age of 83. He left his unmarried daughter Cecilia Mabel Beavan (1874–1944) a fortune of more than £ 11,000 .
