Robert Cecil Beavan

Robert Cecil Beavan (born August 14, 1841 in Mynporie (Minporee) , India , † February 3, 1870 at sea) was a British naturalist interested in ornithology who served as a captain in the British Indian Army .

Life

Robert Cecil Beavan was the firstborn son of the British officer Robert Beavan (1809-1853) stationed in India and his wife Cecilia Mabel Drury (1821-1896), a descendant of the British scholar Benjamin Heath (1704-1766). Both of the couple's sons were born in India. When Robert C. Beavan was twelve years old, his father died in India in October 1853. On November 4, 1859, he himself entered the British Indian Army and served for ten years in their Bengal Staff Corps .

During his years of service in the army he was a corresponding member of the Zoological Society of London . In many different places he collected numerous specimens of bird species and bird eggs and wrote treatises on his discoveries and observations. He also described some species of birds that he had received from his younger brother Reginald (1843-1927), who from 1861 was also a member of the British Army in India. Captain Beavan sent his contributions to the ornithological journal The Ibis and to the Zoological Society of London, which they published in their magazine Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London .

In 1864, Beavan worked at Barrackpore and spent the winter in the now defunct Maunbhoom district , a region that had been explored by Samuel Tickell and Edward Blyth before him . From there came a specimen of a subspecies of the Indian pointed squirrel ( Anathana ellioti pallida ), which he gave to the British Museum . His communications from there were published in The Ibis in 1865 under the title Notes on various Indian Birds . During his stay on the Andaman Islands, Beavan was able to expand his collection further. Using information to him Colonel Robert Christopher Tytler had provided, he could 1867 a work entitled The avifauna of the Andaman Islands (German: The avifauna of the Andaman Islands ) finish and parts thereof gradually in The Ibis publish . Beavan also worked with the Scottish ornithologist AO Hume .

In early 1870 Beavan wanted to return to England because of his poor health. However, he died of emaciation at the age of 28 while traveling on a merchant navy ship.

After his death, Beavan's collections were incorporated into the collections of Arthur Hay, 9th Marquess of Tweeddale , Frederick DuCane Godman and Osbert Salvin . They are kept in the Natural History Museum in London . His book on the freshwater fishes of India "Handbook of the Freshwater Fishes of India" was published in 1877 seven years after his death.

First descriptions by Robert Cecil Beavan

Andaman Endrongo

Beavan has numerous species and subspecies that were new to science described .

species

The species include chronological u. a .:

  • Andaman endrongo ( Dicrurus andamanensis Beavan , 1867)
  • Andaman falcon owl ( Ninox affinis Beavan , 1867)
  • Andaman cuckoo ( Centropus andamanensis Beavan , 1867)

Subspecies

The subspecies include chronological and a .:

  • Andaman star ( Sturnia erythropygia andamanensis ( Beavan , 1867))
  • Beo ( Gracula religiosa andamanensis ( Beavan , 1867))
  • Salangana ( Collocalia esculenta affinis Beavan , 1867)

Dedication names

A subspecies of the red-breasted tit Parus rubidiventris beavani was named Jerdon in his honor by Thomas Caverhill in 1863 . In 1867 Arthur Hay, 9th Marquess of Tweeddale named a subspecies of the rust prinie ( Prinia rufescens beavani ) after him. The Beavan's Kingfisher (Alcedo beavani) , which Hays described in 1874, is now a synonym for the meninting kingfisher subspecies ( Alcedo meninting rufigastra Walden , 1873). Charles Vaurie named a gray drong subspecies ( Dicrurus leucophaeus beavani ) in 1949 , a name that is now considered a synonym for another subspecies of the gray drongo ( Dicrurus leucophaeus longicaudatus Jerdon , 1862). The masked bullfinch ( Pyrrhula erythaca Blyth , 1862), which Beavan first collected on Mount Tonglu, is sometimes called Beavan's Bullfinch in English .

Wilhelm Peters dedicated to him in 1867 Mus beavanii , synonymous with Mus terri color Blyth , 1851. Albert Guenther called 1868 a collective of Beavan Schistura -Art Schistura beavani .

Remarks

  1. Arthur Hay, 9th Marquess of Tweeddale was known from 1862 to 1876 under the name Arthur Viscount Walden. Even if the volume of the Proceedings of the Scientific Meetings of the Zoological Society of London indicates the year 1866, the article did not appear until 1867. Thus, the year of publication according to the International Rules for Zoological Nomenclature is 1867.
