The mask Gimpel ( Pyrrhula erythaca ) is a bird art from the subfamily of the Stieglitz-like . The species occurs in three subspecies in Asia. The population of the species is classified as not endangered by the IUCN .

Appearance

The body length of the masked bullfinch varies between 13 and 17 centimeters, depending on the subspecies. There is a gender dimorphism . The orange-red colored body parts are missing in the female.

The male is gray-brown on the upper side of the body. The head, cheeks, neck and throat are gray. The forehead, the area around the eyes, the reins and the chin are black. This black face mask is delimited in white from the top of the head and the neck. The wings and tail are black and have a bluish sheen. Chest, upper abdomen and flanks are in the subspecies P. e. erythaca and P. e. wilderi orange-red. In the subspecies P. e. owstoni these parts of the body are colored gray. The lower abdomen is white. The rump and the upper and lower tail-coverts are also white. The beak is shiny black, the eyes are dark brown.

Way of life

The masked bullfinch has a very large distribution area. It occurs from the east of the Himalayas to the north of Myanmar . He also settles in Yunnan in southwest China . The distribution area of ​​the subspecies P. e. owstoni is restricted to Taiwan . The habitat are conifer and birch forests as well as rhododendron stocks . The masked bullfinch is a type of high altitude. During the summer half-year it occurs at altitudes above 2,400 meters and is observed up to the vegetation limit. During the winter months he seeks lower altitudes.

The clutch consists of four to six eggs. The shell of the eggs is blue with dark spots and scratches. The female breeds alone. The incubation period is 14 days. The young birds fledge after 18 to 20 days. Masked bullfinches very often raise two broods per year.
