Charles Vaurie

Charles Vaurie (born July 7, 1906 in Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne , France , † May 13, 1975 in Reading , Pennsylvania ) was an American dentist , ornithologist , zoologist and paleontologist . His place of work was New York .

Life

Charles Vaurie moved to the United States at a young age . He studied dentistry at the University of Pennsylvania , where he trained as a dentist. While working in his own dentist's office in New York, he painted pictures of various birds, which became the attention of James Paul Chapin of the American Museum of Natural History . Vaurie worked there from 1942 in the ornithological department of the museum.

In 1948 he wrote the publication A Revision of the bird family Dicruridae together with Ernst Mayr , in which he reports on the evolution of Drongos . His most important work, the publication series Systematic notes on Palearctic birds , brought him international recognition and comprises 53 editions.
