36.8 Kitami-Aioi ( 北 見 相 生 ) 1925-1985

The Aioi Line ( Japanese 相 生 線 , Aioi-sen ) was a railway line in the east of the Japanese island of Hokkaidō . It was opened in 1924/25 and was in operation until 1985.

description

The Aioi line was a 36.8 km long branch line in the sub-prefecture of Okhotsk , which branched off from the Sekihoku main line at Bihoro station and led south through the Abashiri Valley to Kitami-Aioi . The line was cape gauge , single track and not electrified. A total of 14 train stations and on-demand stops were served. The 43.5 km long Tsubetsu forest railway branched off at Tsubetsu station .

Kitami-Aioi station remained as a railway museum.

history

In the appendix of the Railway Construction Act of 1922, the construction of a Senbi line ( 釧 美 線 , Senbi-sen ) was planned. It should lead from Bihoro via Kitami-Aioi to Kushiro . On November 17, 1924, the Ministry of Railways opened the first section from Bihoro to Tsubetsu and gave the line the (supposedly provisional) name Aioi Line. Almost a year later, on November 15, 1925, the section between Tsubetsu and Kitami-Aioi was opened. Due to financial problems, no further construction work was done. After the completion of the further east running Senmō main line in 1931, the further construction to Kushiro no longer seemed to be urgent and the completion of the project was abandoned.

In 1955 and 1956, the Japanese State Railways set up seven new stops after the introduction of diesel multiple units in passenger traffic. In the 1960s there were plans to combine the Aioi line with the Shiranuka line at Hokushin, but this did not materialize. The last freight train pulled by a steam locomotive ran in May 1975. On December 11, 1979, the State Railroad gave up freight transport for cost reasons. Finally, it closed the Aioi line on April 1, 1985.
