The station is located on the northern outskirts and is oriented from northwest to southeast. It has two tracks, both of which are used for passenger traffic. They are located on a covered central platform that is connected to the reception building on the southwest side of the facility by a covered overpass . There is a bus terminal on the station forecourt , which is served by lines from the companies Akan Bus , Hokkaidō Kitami Bus , Abshiri Bus and Abashiri Kankō Kōtsū .
history
The Railway Office (the forerunner of the Railway Ministry ) opened the Kitami – Abashiri section of the Abashiri Main Line ( 網 走 本 線 , Abashiri-honsen ) on October 5, 1912 . On November 17, 1927, the Aioi line to Kitami-Aioi, branching off in Bihoro, was opened . It should have led to Kushiro , but was never finished. A major fire destroyed part of the reception building on June 24, 1953, which was then rebuilt and expanded. The sugar processing company Nippon Tensai Seitō built a 3.5 km long connecting line to the Yoshihoro sugar factory and put it into operation on October 18, 1959. On April 1, 1961, the Kitami – Abashiri section of the Abashiri main line became part of the Sekihoku main line.
For cost reasons, the Japanese State Railways stopped checking in on March 14, 1985. Two weeks later, on April 1, 1985, it shut down the Aioi line; since then Bihoro can only be reached via the main Sekihoku line. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of the new company JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 . In May 1991, JR Freight closed the connecting line to the sugar factory, and on April 1, 2002 also the freight yard. The station has not been staffed since April 30, 2016.
