Ajdir or Axdir (from the mazirischen ⴰⵊⴷⵉⵔ Ajdir , "wall", Arabic أجدير Ajdir , DMG Aǧdīr ) is a city in the Rif region in northern Morocco in the province of Al Hoceïma , about 7 km from the city of Al Hoceïma . It is densely populated, lies in the commuting area of ​​Al Hoceïma and therefore shows dynamic growth. This is reflected in modern architecture. The city had 5314 inhabitants in 2014.

history

Ajdir was the capital of the Rif Republic between 1921 and 1926 . In the local Berber dialect , the Tarifit , Aŷdīr means wall and with the word appendix fortress. Their origin is likely Punic .

Ajdir is the birthplace of Abd al-Karim and Najim Laachraoui, one of the suicide bombers in the terrorist attacks in Brussels on March 22, 2016 .
