Ajit Pai

Ajit Varadaraj Pai (born January 10, 1973 in Buffalo ) is an American lawyer. Since January 23, 2017 he has been chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), appointed by US President Donald Trump to succeed Tom Wheeler . Pai has been a member of the FCC since May 2012, appointed by Trump's predecessor Barack Obama . He is the first incumbent of Indian descent and is a member of the Republican Party .

Career

Pai graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor's degree in social sciences in 1994 and received a Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago in 1997 , where he was intermittently co-editor of the University of Chicago Law Review and was awarded the Thomas J. Mulroy Prize. He then worked at the Department of Justice, communications group Verizon , the US Senate and the FCC, among others .

Positions

In 2017, the National Association of Broadcasters praised Pai for its efforts to revitalize medium-wave broadcasting in the USA, the introduction of the new ATSC 3.0 TV standard and the change in the antitrust protection regulations for station owners.

Pai is considered a vehement opponent of net neutrality . He rejects an initiative passed under President Obama that prescribes this. On December 14, 2017, the FFC under Pai's leadership achieved the lifting of net neutrality in the USA.
