Samuel Alexander von Manstein (born October 14, 1773 on Schippenbeil, † March 2, 1851 in Königsberg ) was a Prussian major general .

His parents were Georg Christoph von Manstein (born April 26, 1743; † October 29, 1790) and his wife Justine Friederike, born von Manstein (born November 11, 1745; † August 26, 1809). His father was a Prussian major and commandant of the Memel fortress .

Life

Manstein visited the cadet houses in Kulm and Berlin . On August 31, 1789, he was employed as a private corporal in the “von Brausen” dragoon regiment of the Prussian army and was promoted to second lieutenant until August 1793 . In 1794 Manstein took part in the battles near Gravici and Piontken during the campaign in Poland and was commended for fighting near Rajgrod.

On March 14, 1801 he was Premier Lieutenant , on September 2, 1803 staff captain and on January 10, 1805 captain . During the Fourth Coalition War he was transferred to the regiment's depot.

After the Treaty of Tilsit , Manstein became captain and squadron chief in the East Prussian Cuirassier Regiment on December 30, 1807 (No. 3) . On December 12, 1809 he was promoted to chief of the body squadron and in this position became major on August 13, 1812. During the Wars of Liberation he fought in the battles near Großgörschen , Dresden , Kulm , Leipzig , Montmirail , La Fere-Champenoise , Paris . Manstein also took part in the siege of Luxembourg and the battles at Etoges and Claye . For Großgörschen he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class and for Leipzig the Cross 1st Class. With his regiment and his fearlessness, Manstein made a decisive contribution to the great cavalry battle on October 14, 1813. He was seriously injured in a saber fight with the enemy leader. The following year he was wounded again at Montmirail.

On March 17, 1815, he received the Order of St. Vladimir IV. Class and on October 2, 1815, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel . On September 18, 1816 Manstein was appointed regimental commander and in this position promoted to colonel on March 30, 1819 with a patent from April 15, 1819 . In 1825 he received the service cross . On March 26, 1831, he was retired with the character of major general and a pension of 1750 thalers. On November 30, 1833, he received the Order of St. Vladimir III. Class. Manstein died of flu on March 2, 1851 in Koenigsberg.

In his assessment in 1819, General von Wrangel wrote: “Tireless activity and a very lively zeal for service, combined with very correct practical knowledge of service, are the characteristics of this excellent regimental commander. He receives the regiment in the most beautiful order and appropriate training and is completely suitable for this command. "

Manstein married Henriette Maria von Manstein (born April 27, 1782), the daughter of a captain, in Königsberg on February 21, 1801. The marriage ended in divorce in 1806, but the couple remarried in 1810 and divorced again on May 2, 1812. On June 7, 1815, Manstein married Wilhelmine Minette von Düsterloh (* February 21, 1796 - March 17, 1872), the daughter of Major Reinhold Friedrich von Düsterloh, in Landsberg an der Warthe . She died as a canon at her sister's in Zehdenick .
