The Academy Bay ( Spanish Bahía de la Academia ) is a bay at the southern end of the island of Santa Cruz , which belongs to the Galapagos Islands and is located in the eastern Pacific about 965 km west of mainland Ecuador .
The bay got its name in 1905 from an expedition of the California Academy of Sciences . It is the seat of the Charles Darwin Research Station , which was founded in 1959 to study the flora and fauna of the Galapagos Islands. Today it also serves as a port for small ships.
In 1906 the stranded Norwegian crew of the crashed ship Alexandra was rescued from Academy Bay .
