The U5 Academy was a private vocational school for communication design in Munich. It was founded in 1967 by Max Condula and has been closed since August 1, 2018.
history
From her experience as a commercial artist out Max Condula and Wolfgang Baum developed the idea of offering training for advertising designers. The training of so-called "commercial graphic artists" at that time should be adapted to the change in the job description.
The change is illustrated by the simultaneous name change of the professional association: Founded in 1919 as the Association of German Commercial Graphics, it was called the Association of German Graphic Designers from 1968 .
In 1967 the academy was founded by Condula and Baum under the name "Lehrinstitut für Grafikgestaltung". In 1968 teaching began in Schwabing. From 1972 until his death in 2004, Dieter Wünsch joined the management as co-owner and lecturer. The teaching institute was often referred to with the abbreviation “U5”, which resulted from the Schwabing address: Ursulastraße 5. The abbreviation became an official part of the name on the occasion of the move to the former brewhouse of the Unionsbräu .
After 40 years of teaching, the U5 Academy had 1,574 graduates. Several graduates made entries in the ADC (Art Directors Club) yearbooks . Marcello Serpa is probably the best known of the award-winning graduates: in 1993 he was the first Latin American to be awarded the Cannes Grand Prix.
The Bavarian State Minister for Education and Culture, Ludwig Spaenle , presented Condula with the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon on November 17, 2009. According to Spaenle's laudation, the “Akademie U5” is “the most successful private communication academy in Germany today”.
One of the lecturers at the U5 was the nationally known typographer Günter Gerhard Lange .
The U5 has been managed by Hans-Peter Albrecht since 2014, after the founders Maximilian Condula and Wolfgang Baum finally transferred it to him in 2016.
In the summer of 2017, the U5 moved from the brewhouse to Klenzestrasse 67 and held some courses in a cinema.
The "Akademie U5" is a member of the MedienCampus Bayern , the umbrella organization for media education and training in Bavaria.
In May 2018, the university had to file for bankruptcy due to impending insolvency. The reason for this was "demands of the city of Munich from a long-term lease agreement". The discrepancies regarding a dismantling obligation at the former location of the U5, the brewhouse of the Unionsbräu, and the unsuccessful search for interested parties to continue the school finally led to the cessation of operations on August 1, 2018. Most of the students were from the Blocherer school and at the University of Munich.
