Academic lunch break at Heidelberg University

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The academic lunch break is a series of events that takes place every summer semester in the University Church (Peterskirche) of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

history

The academic lunch break was held for the first time in the summer semester 2011 on the occasion of the celebrations for the 625th anniversary of Heidelberg University. Since then, it has been organized annually in the summer semester by a faculty (university) or institution of the university. A scientist gives a fifteen-minute short lecture in the university church every weekday at 1 p.m., followed by a fifteen-minute discussion with the audience . The aim is to convey a wide range of current scientific questions and discussions in an understandable way to an audience outside the field.

The first series of events in 2011 was organized by the Center for Astronomy at the University of Heidelberg on the subject of "Uni (versum) for everyone! Half a Heidelberg Star Hours". Since 2015, the lectures can also be seen online on Heidelberg University's YouTube channel. In 2020 the academic lunch break was canceled due to the corona pandemic .
