Rainer Graafen

Rainer Graafen (born April 15, 1953 ) is a German professor and scientist in the field of human geography and historical geography .

Life

Graafen began studying geography and law at the University of Bonn in 1972 . In 1978 he passed the first state examination and in 1980 the second state examination . He received his doctorate in geography in 1983, with a minor in historical geography, at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Bonn, and from 1983 to 1989 he was a university assistant at the seminar for historical geography at the chair of Klaus Fehn. Graafen completed his habilitation in 1989 at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Bonn on the subject of "The spatial effects of legal regulations on settlements in the German Empire, with special consideration of Prussia, during the Weimar Republic". Since October 1989 he has been senior assistant and since October 1992 university lecturer at the Department of Historical Geography at the University of Bonn.

From 1992 to 1997 Graafen was head of the DFG project “Old Trade Routes and Settlements in the Tibetan Himalayas ” within the framework of the DFG priority program “Settlement Processes and State Formation in the Tibetan Himalaya”. In the winter semester 1993/94 he took over the representation of the professorship for anthropogeography at the University of Koblenz-Landau, Campus Koblenz and was appointed professor of anthropogeography there in April 1994 by the Rhineland-Palatinate Minister for Science, Education and Further Education. Since his habilitation until 2008, Graafen had the right to evaluate master's theses and dissertations in Bonn in the subject of historical geography with Klaus Fehn as a second reviewer.

In 1996 Graafen took over the management of the Geography Department at the University of Koblenz-Landau, Campus Koblenz, and since then has been head of the department, alternating two years with his colleague in Physical Geography. From the summer semester 2000 to the winter semester 2013/14 he was Vice Dean of Faculty 3 ( Mathematics / Natural Sciences ), from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2005 he held the position of Managing Director of the Institute for Integrated Natural Sciences at Faculty 3. From 2004 to 2012 he was head of the newly founded East-West seminar.

Rainer Graafen retired on September 30, 2018.

Scientific focus

Graafen researched and worked in particular in the areas of legal geography, historical geography, cultural landscape research , spatial research , settlement geography , economic geography and environmental law , with a focus on spatial planning in Germany, migration within Germany and economic structural change . As part of this, he worked on projects such as the effects of the structural funds of the European Union (1993-1998), settlement development in northern Rhineland-Palatinate (1993-2018), legislation on environmental and cultural landscape protection (1994-2010), preliminary studies on the cultural landscape of the Middle Rhine Valley ( 1997-1998), refugee settlements in Rwanda (1999-2015), cultural landscape protection at the municipal level. Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis (2008-2011) and the effects of demographic change in northern Rhineland- Palatinate (2015-2018).
