The Akaflieg Darmstadt D 18 was a single-engine sport aircraft that was developed and built by the Academic Aviation Group of the Technical University of Darmstadt in the 1920s .
development
The D 18 is based on the previous D 16 model from 1927, but has been fundamentally revised due to the available more powerful 44 kW Armstrong Siddeley Genet engine . It was designed by Friedrich Fecher and Ritz as a cantilever double-decker with extreme staggering. The trailing edge of the upper wing was at about the same height as the leading edge of the lower wing. The two-man crew sat one behind the other in an open cabin. The aircraft was completed in 1929, just in time to be registered for participation in the first ever European tour , and D–1561
approved in January . The meeting started out promising for the pattern. In the consumption competition, the pilot Johannes Nehring achieved a fuel consumption of 27.95 kg on a 324.2 km route at an average speed of 156.7 km / h and was thus able to take first place in the final result of the technical competition. In the subsequent speed race, however, Nehring had to make an emergency landing on the route from Warsaw to Poznan and damaged the aircraft so badly that it was eliminated for the rest of the sightseeing flight.
The D 18 was then rebuilt and equipped with a more powerful Genet Major engine with 81 kW. Equipped in this way, she was able to break three world records in her class, including an altitude record of 7521 m on April 21, 1930 and one of 8142 m in May. She was also planned for the European tour of 1930 , for which she received a closed canopy. Participation was, however, greatly impaired by the susceptibility of the drive to failure. Eventually the engine stalled during the air race on a stretch over the Mediterranean. The pilot Rudolf Neininger had to go down on the water, but could be rescued, but the aircraft was deleted from the register and scrapped in the same month. The D 18 served as a template for the two further developments D 22 and D 29 .
