Johannes Nehring

Johannes Nehring (born August 18, 1902 in Graudenz ; † April 16, 1930 in Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue ) was a German glider pioneer.

Life

Johannes Nehring was born as the son of a school principal in 1902 in Graudenz in West Prussia. He grew up in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe , came to Darmstadt after graduating in 1921 and studied mechanical engineering at the TH Darmstadt from 1922 . He joined the Akaflieg in Darmstadt. In 1923 he learned to fly and quickly became known as a talented pilot. In 1925 he took the C-test during a competition in Rossitten and also began to fly with a motor.

For flight days and a. At the Lichtwiese airfield, Nehring made a name for himself through acrobatic flight performances. Due to his repeated "long-distance gliding" successes at the Rhön glider flying competitions , he was called the "master of slope sailing". After 1925 he set numerous world altitude and distance records.

Since 1928 Nehring was the pilot of the Darmstadt aviation weather station. On April 30, 1928, on behalf of the meteorologist Walter Georgii, he achieved the first circling in the thermal updraft from the Lichtwiese airfield .

A year later he flew a world record on the Bergstrasse with the "Darmstadt II" glider by covering 72 km from Malchen to Ubstadt near Bruchsal. On April 1, 1930, when the Darmstadt D 18 double-decker flew in without an oxygen device , he reached an altitude of 8,050 m.

On April 16, 1930, Johannes Nehring had a fatal accident with a Junkers A35 ( aircraft registration D-990, serial number 1061) on the Kühkopf during a weather observation flight on behalf of the weather station . The cause was a broken wing due to extreme icing.

Nehring was buried in a grave of honor in the cemetery in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe.
