The Lichtwiese landscape park is a park on the eastern edge of the southern Hessian city of Darmstadt . The facility is located in the statistical district An den Lichtwiesen in the Darmstadt-Ost district . The Lichtwiese landscape park has been the location of the Lichtwiese campus of the Technical University of Darmstadt since the O 10 development plan came into force in 1966 .

Emergence

Until the late Middle Ages , the area of the later Lichtwiese was in a closed forest area. The clearing , which began in the late 15th century, allowed the meadows to develop into the second half of the 16th century. The northern parts of the area were first mentioned in 1574 as a night pasture .

Buildings of the 20th and 21st centuries

On the Lichtwiese, located between Nieder-Ramstädter Straße and the route of the Odenwaldbahn on the former Bessunger district (incorporated in 1888 as Darmstadt-Bessungen ), the sports facilities of the then Technical University and SV Darmstadt 98 were built from 1919 . These were supplemented by an outdoor pool, a marathon goal and other sports facilities in the 1920s.

In July 1924, at the instigation of the Hessen-Flieger Verein für Luftfahrt 1924 Darmstadt, a commercial airport was opened by President Carl Ulrich , as the August Euler airfield in the neighboring town of Griesheim had been occupied by French troops since the end of 1918. In 1934 this airfield was moved back to Griesheim.

In the 1920s there was also the light air bath of the Darmstadt Naturheilverein founded in 1884 on the Lichtwiese. This is where the architecture department building, which opened in 1969, stands today.

At the end of the 1950s, the Georg Büchner School by Hans Schwippert and the student village based on plans by the architect Jan Hubert Pinand were built on the Lichtwiese site.Several infrastructure and institute buildings of the former university have been built since 1967 on the south side of the Lichtwiese. Since 2008, additional facilities have been built on the Lichtwiese campus , including an auditorium and media center, several research buildings, a climbing hall, the Lichtwiese children's home, a university sports center , the Otto Wolfskehl House , a student dormitory and a parking garage.

The area of the Lichtwiese landscape park also includes the Darmstadt Vivarium , the Old Cemetery and the stadium at the Böllenfalltor . The Darmstadt Botanical Garden is located on the northeast edge of the landscape park , while the landscape park borders the Darmstadt city forest to the east and south.

A section of the Darmbach , the upper reaches of the Darmstadt river Landgraben / Landwehr, flows through the Lichtwiese landscape park . The stretch of water in the Lichtwiese area was redesigned in 2009 and 2012 and partially renatured .

From 1986 to 2010 the Lichtwiese was the venue of the nationally important Darmstadt Cross every year .

In 2015, the machine building halls from 1976 were placed under monument protection.
