history

precursor

The interest in aviation in Darmstadt can be traced back to the 18th century, because as early as 1783, Hereditary Prince Ludwig I of Hesse-Darmstadt brought small balloons from Paris to experiment with at court. In 1908 August Euler founded the Euler flying machine works in Griesheim . In 1911 the Hessische Flugstudien-Gesellschaft was set up, which in 1913 was renamed Verein für Luftfahrt Darmstadt and in 1925 merged with the Hessen-Fliegern founded in 1924, whose members had participated in reliability flights, flight days, exhibitions and lectures since 1911.

Weimar Republic

Since the Darmstadt airfield Griesheimer Sand was occupied by the French until 1930 after the First World War , the association was the first to successfully promote the construction of a new airfield. The city of Darmstadt left the so-called Lichtwiese to the establishment of a new airfield, which was inaugurated on July 13th and 14th, 1924. After the French troops withdrew in 1930, the Griesheimer Sand airfield was restored and also used by the Hessen pilots. In the spring of 1934, flight operations were officially relocated from Lichtwiese to Griesheimer Sand.

In the Third Reich

In the course of the synchronization in the Third Reich , all remaining club members were asked to join Regional Group 11 Darmstadt of the new German Air Sports Association . The Hessen-Flieger Association came to a complete standstill.

Frankfurt-Egelsbach Airport

post war period

The post-war period brought great challenges for the Darmstadt pilots, because their former home airfield was occupied by the US Army . The aviation enthusiasts first gathered in the Aero Club Darmstadt from 1951 and from 1953 also in the Darmstadt Sports Aviation Club. In 1968 a group of motorized pilots decided to revive the Hessen-Flieger Verein and its traditions, as there was a prospect of using the occupied Griesheimer Sand.

On January 17, 1969, ten flight enthusiasts met in Darmstadt's restaurant Zum Rosengarten and decided to re-establish the association, and on February 7 the first general meeting took place.

In 1992, the US Army announced that the Hesse pilots would share the airfield on May 31, and the association moved to its current location at Egelsbach airfield.

Griesheim triangle

The Griesheimer Dreieck was a navigation flight competition that was organized for the first time on September 2, 1972 by the Hessen-Fliegern and the BFS Fliegerclub. The competition included answering questions on various aviation-related topics as well as a triangular flight Oppenheim - Bensheim - Bismarck tower with search images. The most prominent participant in the first Griesheim triangle was Darmstadt's Lord Mayor Heinz Winfried Sabais . Until 1990, the competition was held annually in early summer.
