The Akaflieg Darmstadt D 22 is a German sports plane of the Academic Flying Group of the Technical University of Darmstadt in the 1930s.

development

The D 22 is a direct further development of the D 18 from 1929 and, like this, a design by Friedrich Fecher. The double-decker arrangement with the heavily staggered upper and lower wings was retained, but the attachment of the upper wing was reinforced and a main landing gear with pressure rubber suspension and other tires were used. The prototype made its maiden flight in 1931. It was powered by a Gipsy III engine equipped with hanging cylinders and was intended for comparison flights in England, which is why it also received the British registration G-ABPX . Even before the transfer, however, it was irreparably damaged in a failed landing.

This was followed by another copy, which was intended for the 1932 European tour . It received a local As 8 R engine and the designation D 22 a. Shortly before the start of the competition, it was approved as D-2222 in August 1932 and started with the competition code B 8. As with its predecessor D 18, the meeting for the D 22 was quite disappointing. Although it achieved the fastest average speed of 205 km / h on the cross-country flight through several European countries behind the He 64, which started as favorites , it only came in 17th place in the final ranking. It was then flown for several years with Akaflieg Darmstadt, most recently as D-EQIN , until it crashed in March 1935, killing pilot Biedermann.

construction

The D 22 a with folded wings

The D 22 is a self-supporting double-decker in wood construction with extremely staggered, einholmigen upper and lower wings of the same span and trapezoidal outline. The graduation is 1.10 m. To save space, the wings are designed to be foldable on the sides of the fuselage. Ailerons are located in both the lower and upper wings, there are no landing flaps. The tail unit in normal construction is also made of wood. The D 22 has a wheel chassis with rubber-sprung main wheels with a track width of 1.40 m and not connected by an axle, wheel brakes and high-pressure tires measuring 600 × 100 mm. There is a grinding spur at the rear.
