The Akaroa Harbor is one of two major natural ports of the Banks Peninsula on the coast of the Region Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand . The other is Lyttelton Harbor .
Origin of name
Akaroa means "long port" in the language of the Māori tribe, Kāi Tahu .
geography
The Akaroa Harbor extends from the southern coast of Banks Peninsula about 16.5 km to the north, with the natural harbor cuts through the peninsula on the half and on its km breitesten place in the northern area 4.6 measures. The places Akaroa , Duvauchelle , Barrys Bay , French Farm and Wainui are on the coast of the water.
history
The Ōnawe Peninsula at the end of the estuary used to be the site of a fortified settlement ( Pā ) of the Māori .
natural reserve
512.15 hectares of the port are placed under protection as Akaroa Marine Reserve , which makes up around 12% of the total port area.
tourism
Occasionally the natural harbor is called by cruise ships, while the passengers in Akaroa are given shore leave.
