The Akita Komagatake ( Jap. 秋田駒ヶ岳 ) is a 1637.4-meter-high stratovolcano on the Japanese island of Honshu . It is located in the Ōu Mountains in the urban area of Semboku ( Akita Prefecture ) and Shizukuishi ( Iwate Prefecture ).
The top of the volcano is formed by two calderas . The larger, southern Nambu Caldera (1.5 × 3 kilometers) is connected to the smaller, round Hokubu Caldera (1.2 kilometers in diameter) by a narrow gap. Both calderas were formed in eruptions 13,500 and 11,600 years ago, respectively. Two craters (Me-dake and Ko-dake) dominate the northeast corner of the southern caldera. The highest point of the volcano is formed by the Komagatake crater.
The last eruption between September 1970 and January 1971 began at Medake crater. Accompanied by strombolian eruptions , a lava flow flowed out, which reached a length of 600 meters.
