Action 10:23

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The action 10:23 (also action 10 high 23 and action in 1023 ; . English 10:23 Campaign ) is a campaign by consumer advocates and supporters of scientific skepticism against homeopathy . The aim of the campaign is to disseminate basic criticism and negative study results on homeopathy. By taking an overdose of highly potent homeopathic drugs from the pharmacy, it should be demonstrated that anyone who has understood the fundamentals of science can safely eat 10 grams of sugar globules . This fact should arouse curiosity to learn more about what is behind the principles of homeopathy.

Action 10:23 in Amsterdam by Dutch skeptics.

The name of the campaign is an allusion to potentization in homeopathy and is derived from the Avogadro constant , a physical constant that is defined as the number of particles per amount of substance . When one milliliter of a one-molar solution is diluted by this factor, statistically speaking, only one single molecule of the starting substance is present in one milliliter of the new solution. If the solution is further diluted, the probability that a single molecule of the starting substance will still be present when one milliliter of liquid is removed tends to be zero.

On January 30, 2010, members of the British and New Zealand skeptic movement for the first time ingested massive overdoses of homeopathic medicines to demonstrate that highly potent homeopathic medicines are just overpriced sugar globules from the pharmacy. The action was carried out again on February 5, 2011, at 10:23 a.m., in 30 countries and 70 cities. The skeptics association GWUP organized the campaign for Germany and Austria . The action in Cologne was moderated by forensic biologist Mark Benecke . The campaign has been carried out sporadically since 2011, such as in October 2013 in Zurich and on April 11, 2014 in Vienna. In 2016, the campaign was repeated in some cities in Germany (e.g. Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne): On October 23, 2016 at 10:23 am, people who were critical of homeopathy again took an overdose of highly potent homeopathic drugs to demonstrate that, contrary to the statements in Hahnemanns Organon (§ 137, 275, 276) an overdose has no consequences. This time, too, the campaign in German-speaking countries was sponsored by the Society for the Scientific Investigation of Paraweek e. V. (GWUP) organized.

criticism

The Karl and Veronica Carstens Foundation pointed out in a statement that homeopathic medicines in Germany are subject to the Medicines Act (AMG) . The call to take them collectively could therefore be tantamount to a clinical trial and thus require approval. The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) as the competent higher authority of the Federal Ministry of Health is examining the matter.

However, due to a lack of reliable information, the BfArM saw no basis for an assessment and therefore no reason for further investigations.

Furthermore, the Carstens Foundation said that the actions had no meaningfulness according to scientific criteria and that they trivialize the actual problem of knowledge in homeopathy research , since the complex therapy system homeopathy would be reduced to the properties of homeopathic medicines. In addition, a single intake of high potency in healthy people is rarely sufficient to cause a reaction.

The Federal Association of Drug Manufacturers claimed that the action cultivated outdated prejudices and irresponsibly disinformed patients.
