The freedom instead of fear e. V. is a registered association founded in January 2009 with headquarters in Berlin , which campaigns for civil rights , in particular data protection and freedom of information . It is politically, ethnically and religiously neutral.

purpose

The purpose is compliance with civil and human rights (in particular data protection), the protection of privacy , the right to informational self-determination and freedom of information .

In addition to the articles of association, there is a "joint declaration" which explains the association's self-image and which the public is encouraged to support.

The association is represented externally by two board members and the treasurer. On November 25, 2011, the charitable status of the association was confirmed by the tax office for corporations in Berlin .

Actions and campaigns

In press releases and statements , the association points out, among other things, the dangers to privacy from surveillance laws ( data retention of communication and travel data , RFID chips in ID cards and passports, compulsory recording of biometric data), but also from the economy ( customer cards , cookies , apps ) down.

The association organizes information booths in the Berlin area, art events, rallies, panel discussions and workshops on political education. At these events, the active members of the association inform about currently planned laws in the field of security policy and consumer protection and warn of computer security gaps.

State and business surveillance

The association describes the dangers of adaptation as a result of the introduction of data retention and warns against the restriction of freedom of information.

The association also draws attention to the lack of employee data protection in Germany.

Commitment to freedom of information and transparency

According to the motto "Use open data - protect private data!" The association supports the initiative transparent civil society of Transparency International and sits in authorities and businesses for transparency one.

2011 census

The mobilization against the census , the census in June 2011, carried out by the association, among others , had little success.

Campaign for encrypted emails in online retail

In autumn 2014 the association started an initiative to encourage online shop operators to provide better technical support for their customers' privacy. To do this, they should transmit the usual confirmation emails to their customers using OpenPGP-encrypted emails (GnuPG). The legal and technical obstacles are examined at various levels, also together with the responsible data protection officers and consumer associations.

In the spring of 2017, Aktion Freiheit statt Angst submitted this proposal for encrypted confirmation emails for online businesses as an IT solution to the SME Initiative's competition for CEBIT . The idea was rated as one of the best in the IT security category.

Educational offers

With an educational program, the association offers schools and youth camps the opportunity to order workshops on the topics of “ Democracy & Law ”, “ Data Protection & Data Security ” and “Self-Protection & Media Competence ”.

Annual workshops on Safer Internet Day take place either as a CryptoParty with direct training on encryption and data security, or discussions are held to find a strategy for sensible behavior with regard to one's own security on the Internet.

Human rights violations

The association also sees human rights as endangered by the refugee policy at the EU's external borders and therefore turns against Frontex .

Drones for war and surveillance

The association regards automated warfare using drones and other “intelligent” systems as a threat to human rights. That is why the association has been involved in the German anti-drone movement since 2011, especially in the drone working group of the Berlin Peace Coordination. As part of this alliance, the first European meeting of the anti-drone movement took place in Berlin in December 2013. The first global day of action against combat and surveillance drones on October 4, 2014 was supported by the association.

Collection of data breaches and scandals on the web

Over 5000 references to data abuse (data breaches and scandals) and violations of fundamental rights ( right to informational self-determination , freedom of information ) were documented on the association's website .

Honorary members

At the annual general meeting of the association in summer 2016, the members unanimously decided to apply to Edward Snowden for an honorary membership. He has done the world a great service with his revelations. The association is grateful for his decision to open his eyes to the world, even by giving up his career and losing his family. Edward Snowden has accepted honorary membership.

Nomination for the German Engagement Prize

In 2013, the association was nominated for the German Engagement Prize for its commitment to educating people about the safe use of information technology at workshops and at information stands .

The association has been registered with the European Commission as a lobby group under the registration number 17019643006-45 since 2011.

In August 2013 the association became a participant in the European Platform for Fundamental Rights . In April 2014 the association took part in the 7th meeting of the Fundamental Rights Platform in Vienna with over 100 other NGOs from Europe.
