The action Save the old town of Graz was a media campaign and citizens' initiative aimed at preserving the old town of the provincial capital of Graz in Styria .

The action began on October 1, 1972. The Grazer Kleine Zeitung was in charge with its local editor at the time, Max Mayr . The initiative collected 107,571 signatures in favor of the following objectives: rescue and activation of valuable buildings, creation of pedestrian zones , construction of underground car parks on the edge of the old town , improvement of public transport. The initiative succeeded in preventing the installation of an underground car park in the historic Graz Landhaushof .

As a result, the first international old town congress took place in Graz in 1974. In 1974 the Styrian Landtag passed the Graz Old Town Conservation Act; Protection zones were created, a fund set up and an expert commission set up. In 1975, on the occasion of the “European Year of Cultural Heritage”, the International City Forum Graz was founded, which can be regarded as the successor organization to the campaign.
