Max Mayr (born August 19, 1928 in Lohnsburg , Upper Austria ; † June 21, 2012 in Graz ) was an Austrian journalist. He was a monument protection activist and is known as the “savior of Graz's old town”.

Max Mayr came from a farming family in Upper Austria and enjoyed specialist training in agriculture. From 1955 he worked as editor of the Wende , a newspaper for rural youth . Mayr had been a member of the editorial team of the Kleine Zeitung since June 1, 1959, and from 1967 as its chief on duty .

With the support of editor-in-chief Fritz Csoklich , the local journalist endeavored to find new forms of communication with the readership and to activate them for purposes oriented towards the common good. His “ Action Save the Old Town of Graz ”, launched in October 1972, was particularly successful . Between October 1, 1972 and January 31, 1973 he managed to collect 107,571 signatures.

Mayr's book Graz - Praise of the Old Town was published in September 1974 . The fact that UNESCO declared the old town of Graz a World Heritage Site in 1999 is not least due to Mayr's merit.

Max Mayr received the Ring of Honor of the City of Graz, the Great Gold Medal of Honor of the State of Styria , he received the title of professor and became Honorary President of the International City Forum Graz, which he co-initiated. Other honors: the State Prize for Journalistic Achievements in the Interest of Young People and the Hans Kudlich Prize of the Eco-Social Forum .
