Action group baby food

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The action group baby food e. V. (AGB) is a German association with the aim of " ending the avoidable suffering and dying of children through inappropriate nutrition, as well as promoting the rights of children to adequate nutrition and health". To achieve this, consumer protection , education and lobbying work are carried out. The seat of the association is Göttingen . The association was founded in 1981 by people from the field of health and development cooperation and buyers of baby food.

In the opinion of the association, this can be achieved worldwide by promoting and protecting breastfeeding as well as by taking clear action against the advertising and marketing practices of the baby food industry . The work of the AGB is supported by around 170 groups nationwide.

The association is part of the International Baby Food Action Network , to which it belongs as a German section. The Baby Food Action Group also received an award from the La Leche League .

Main tasks

The overarching purpose of the association is to collect information on aggressive advertising methods from baby food manufacturers and to bring them to the public. In addition to public relations, lobbying, consumer protection and educational work, the association advocates more transparency in the relationships between supranational and state institutions and the interests of industry.

Among other things, the association advocates a boycott against the world's largest supplier of baby food, Nestlé , and also calls for socially and environmentally sustainable products to be purchased.

In the reporting period 2000/2001, the association discovered several violations by the food company Nestlé against the International Code for the Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes. These included the distribution of free samples to mothers and health workers, the placement of advertising material in health facilities, gifts and other attempts at corruption to health workers, direct contact between company staff and pregnant women or mothers, and free or discounted deliveries to health facilities.

Furthermore, according to the association, Nestlé attracts negative attention due to the inadequate or missing labeling of baby food in the respective national language and massive advertising in the general public.

According to the association, the boycott is actively supported by around 170 groups and more than 10,000 people in Germany.
