Akzisehaus (Osnabrück)

The Akzisehaus is a building in the Lower Saxony city of Osnabrück in the immediate vicinity of the Heger-Tor and the museum complex consisting of the Felix Nussbaum House and the Museum of Cultural History .

history

The Akzisehaus, built around 1817 in the classical style, is the last remaining customs house in Osnabrück. It was built when the narrow gates between the ramparts and walls had been torn down. Until the middle of the 19th century, the so-called excise , a tax on consumer goods such as wine, beer, flour or even grain, was levied here. At that time, this excise was one of the most important sources of income for the city, along with the income from coal mining in Piesberg . A guard was temporarily housed here. The post office had set up a branch office in 1894 , and it continued until 1972. Today this building is still often referred to as a small post office . Afterwards, art was presented here until a few years ago. The focus was on the art of the 20th century and the series of Osnabrück art and artists .

Until the completion of the expansion of the Felix-Nussbaum-Haus in 2011, the Akzisehaus was the museum shop of the Museum of Cultural History and at the same time the ticket office for the Museum of Cultural History and the Felix-Nussbaum-Haus. Until 2017, the Akzisehaus housed the museum workshop of the Museum Education Service. The building is currently used by the Museum Quarter as an event and exhibition space.

From May 11 to November 13, 2011, the Museum of Cultural History in the Akzisehaus showed the exhibition Built into the desert - 1000 years of the St. Johann Collegiate Church . The exhibition is part of a cooperation between the museum and the parish of St. Johann, the Cathedral Treasury and Diocesan Museum and the University of Osnabrück . Students of art history developed an educational museum exhibition that focuses on the architecture of the Middle Ages using the example of St. Johann.

Award

In 2020, the hbs culture fund, run by the Lower Saxony Savings Bank Foundation, awarded the Museum Quarter and thus the Akzisehaus as part of it the museum prize, which is awarded every two years . According to the jury, the successful merger of the four houses under the theme of peace was recognized.
