al-Baghawī

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abū Muhammad al-Husain ibn Masʿūd al-Farrā 'al-Baghawī ( Arabic أبو محمد الحسين بن مسعود الفراء البغوي, DMG Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥusain ibn Masʿūd al-Farrāʾ al-Baġawī ; born 1044 in Bagh near Herat ; d. 1117 or 1122 in Marw al-Rudh ) was a Persian Shafiite scholar. He is the author of a well-known Koran exegesis (of the Tafsīr work Maʿālim at-tanzīl  /معالم التنزيل) and the hadith - collection Maṣābīḥ as-Sunna  /مصابيح السنة. His nicknames were Rukn ad-Dīn and Muḥyi 's-Sunna. Al-Baghawi came from the village of Bagh or Baghshur near Herat. He owes his Nisba al-Baghawi ("from Bagh") to this origin . The part of the name al-Farrāʾ (often also ibn al-Farrāʾ ) can be traced back to his father's occupation. This was a furrier or fur dealer. Al-Baghawi is described as pious and ascetic. Little is known about his life. Around 1067 he went to Marw ar-Rudh and studied Fiqh and Hadith with the Qadi al-Ḥusain bin Muḥammad al-Marw ar-Rūdī. He later settled there. He died of old age and was buried at the side of his teacher al-Ḥusain.
