List of hadith collections
This is a list of hadith collections . Important Sunni hadith collections are the Six Books (الكتب الستة, see main article: al-kutub as-sitta ), important imamitic (twelve-Shiite) the four books (الكتب الأربعة, see main article: al-kutub al-arba'a ). In addition to other collections of hadiths from the Sunnis and Shiites , the list also includes those from the Ibadites and the Mu'tazilites .
From a passage from the work of the Persian historian Tabari highlighted by Alfred Guillaume , the problem of tradition of the Umayyad period emerges particularly well:
"Tabari states that Mu'awiya I ordered that all hadith favorable to the house of 'Ali should be suppressed, and the glories of the family of' Uthman be extolled in hadith. The Umayyad hand is perhaps most clearly seen in the traditions which were forged to emphasize the sanctity of Jerusalem vis-à-vis Mecca and Medina. ( Tabari states that Mu'awiya I ordered that all hadith favorable to the house of 'Ali should be suppressed and that the glory of the ' Uthman family should be extolled in the hadith. The hand of the Umayyads is perhaps most evident in the traditions that were forged to emphasize the sanctity of Jerusalem to Mecca and Medina . ) "
Al-Zuhri is said to have said with regard to the Umayyads : “These princes forced us to write hadith.” (These princes have compelled us to write hadith.)
