Ibn Bābawaih
Abū Jaʿfar Muhammad ibn ʿAlī Ibn Bābawaih (or Ibn Bābūyih ) al-Qummī ( Arabic أبو جعفر محمد بن علي ابن بابويه القمي, DMG Abū Ǧaʿfar Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī Ibn Bābawaih al-Qummī , b. 918 in Qom ; died 991 ), also Sheikh Sadūq (الصدوق, DMG aṣ-Ṣadūq 'the truth lover ') was an important Imamitic hadith scholar of the Twelve Shia . His hadith collection Man lā yaḥḍuru-ūh al-faqīh is one of the canonical Four Books of the Twelve Shia.
Life
Muhammad Ibn Bābawaih was the son of the well-known Shiite scholar Ali ibn Husain Ibn Bābawaih al-Qummī (d. 939). As a young man he traveled to different places to learn about traditions. His first stops after leaving Qom included Rey , the capital of the Buyids , Mashhad , Nishapur and again Raiy. At the end of 353 (= 964 AD) he left Raiy to go on Hajj . On his way back from Mecca at the beginning of the following year, he traveled through Iraq and stayed for a while in Kufa and Baghdad . In Baghdad, al-Sheikh al-Mufid heard hadith from him. He returned to Raiy via the city of Hamadan .
A second journey, which started in 978, took him east. He visited Mashhad , Balkh , Samarkand and the Fergana Valley . He spent the last years of his life in Raiy. He was buried there too. His tomb is near the resting place of Abdul Azim Hasani in the city in a place now named Ibn Babawaih after him.
